01 Technology
The hand moves. The forearm does the work.
Most muscles that bend and straighten your fingers live in your forearm, not in your hand. That is where SOMA looks.
02 What cameras and eyes miss
Cameras and eyes see the movement. Not which muscles did it.
After stroke, the wrist and shoulder often take over from the fingers. The rep looks done and gets counted. In the forearm, the wrong muscles did it.
Right rep
SOMAFingers did the work

03 Electrical Impedance Tomography
Signal in. Tissue read.
- Step 1Sixteen electrodes ring the forearm.Built into a soft, washable band.
- Step 2They take turns sending a signal, and the rest read how it spreads.Working muscle changes how the current flows.
- Step 3The readings rebuild a live image of the forearm. It shows which muscle groups did the rep.
- Step 4A motion sensor (IMU) in the pod adds the movement.Muscle plus motion lets Somi tell fingers from wrist.
04 Somi
Somi, your personal Physical AI.
Somi is task-based. The OT teaches Somi a real task in 2 minutes: button a shirt, hold a spoon, let go of a cup. Somi counts the good reps and cues the next right rep, then fades its cues. A wrong rep gets a kind “Try again”, never a red X.
05 Compared
What each tool can see at home.
| Tool | What it sees | What it misses at home |
|---|---|---|
| Other apps | Finger and wrist motion, so they count the rep | Which muscles did it. Camera apps also need a clear view of the home. |
| Data glove | Finger angles | Muscle work. Hard to put on a stiff or weak hand. |
| Surface EMG | Electrical activity under each electrode | The whole forearm at once. Needs careful placement. |
| SOMA | Which muscle groups work across the forearm (EIT), plus the movement (IMU) | Privacy-first and camera-free. One soft band, calibrated in about a minute. |
06 Hardware
SOMA Band, unpacked.
0 cameras. Private at home, by design.
07 Where we are
A prototype in validation.
Next: a stroke-hand accuracy study, a home donning trial and clinic pilots, with our clinical partners and before any patient use. Product screens here are illustrative. SOMA is not yet a medical device.
